Dairy cattle from across the United States and Canada vied for awards at World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, when it was held from October 1-6. Sunny, summer- like temperatures were on tap for all but one of Expo’s busy days which featured even hotter competition in the eight different breed shows which took place on the rust coloured shavings in the Coliseum showring. This year’s “Dynasty in Dairy” themed event drew huge numbers of spectators from around the world, eager to take in the outstanding dairy cattle shows and sales, visit the commercial trade exhibits, and renew and make new friendships. Exhibitors from at least 28 US states and six Canadian provinces competed in the Holstein and Red & White Shows at Expo this year. Westcoast Holsteins, Chilliwack, BC, and R&F Livestock, Cudworth, SK, took full showstrings to Expo and were joined by other individual Western Canada exhibitors and a large contingent of cattle and show enthusiasts from Eastern Canada.
Two former World Dairy Expo Grand and Supreme Champions battled it out for top honours in the 460- head International Holstein Show judged by Lynn Harbaugh of Wisconsin. Gaining the final nod for Grand Champion was ERBACRES SNAPPLE SHAKIRA-ET, the winning Aged Cow owned by Ferme Jacobs (QC), the show’s Premier Breeder, and their partners Ty-D Holsteins, Kilian Theraulaz, Ferme Antelimarck and Attaboy Holstein. Shakira, the stylish, well balanced and long framed O Kaliber daughter with the snugger udder attachments, was later crowned Expo’s Supreme Champion, an honour she also achieved here in 2021. Tabbed as Reserve Grand Champion was the second Aged Cow, OAKFIELD SOLOM FOOTLOOSE-ET, the open, deep ribbed Solomon daughter from Showbox Sires (WI) and Vierra Dairy (CA), who had been Grand and Supreme Champion here last year. Cited as Honourable

This Ontario-bred cow was one of three class winners sired by Croteau Lesperron Unix, the overall Premier Sire. Jim Butler (IL) won the Premier Exhibitor banner.
Canadian exhibitors bred and/or owned 13 of the 17 individual class winners in the Holstein Show, plus took the Grand Champion, Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate Champion, and Junior Champion female titles. Among the list of Canadian-bred winners was SKYCREST SIDEKICK NAILPOLISH, the stylish, white Sidekick daughter bred by Skycrest Holsteins (AB) who was first Junior 3-Year-Old for Diane Borba (CA). Westcoast Holsteins achieved one of their goals when they exhibited their very first Senior Best Three Females (or Breeder’s Herd) entry at Madison and finished a strong third in that class.
The International Red & White Show drew 351 entries for the appraisal of Judge Phillip Topp of Ohio. A long bodied Canadian-bred cow who “moved like a kitten,” PREMIUM APPLE CRISP LILLY-RED was declared Grand Champion for Jim Butler, who had just purchased this 4-Year-Old Apple Crisp daughter. Last year’s Grand Champion, RANSOM-RAIL BETH-RED, clinched Reserve Grand Champion this time after heading the 5-Year-Olds for MilkSource, Ransom-Rail and Laurie Fisher. This well balanced cow is sired by Riverdown Unstopabull, the show’s Premier Sire. Oakfield Corners Dairy (NY) was the overall Red & White Show Premier Exhibitor, while Kress-Hill Dairy (WI) was Premier Breeder.
