WC DAIRY NEWS CHRISTMAS 2023
Celebrating Special Achievements at the BC Dairy Industry Conference
Dairy Industry Achievement Award
Ben and Jenny have been married for 49 years, raised eight children and have 26 grandchildren.
Ben will continue to operate his poultry farm and enjoy tinkering with machinery in his shop. He looks forward to working on some projects and doing some travel that have been on hold for some years.
“This industry isn’t about one person – it never has been,” stated an emotional Ben Janzen as he addressed the Dairy Conference audience. He acknowledged the support of his wife Jenny and family for picking up the slack at home when he was often away. Ben went on to compliment the dedication and capability of the Milk Board staff, “Everyone works for producers.” Recognizing the industry has a “history of good and bad times,” Ben also recognized that it “has a history of resilient producers – this is the strength of our industry.” As he wrapped up his words of acceptance, Ben made a final humble gesture, saying “It’s an honour and a privilege to receive this award, but it belongs to all producers of this industry.”
BC’s Top Milk Quality Award
Congratulations Viewfield Farm!
Dave Taylor gratefully accepted the BC Milk Quality Award on behalf of the Taylor Family back home, from BC Dairy Director, Sarah Sache.
The Taylors of Viewfield Farm in Courtenay on Vancouver Island have been producers of high quality milk for many years. Most recently, they had BC’s Top Quality in 2015 and achieved second place in 2016 and 2019. Their farm team/herd achieved an impressive SCC of 34,787 and IBC average of 5375 over the 2022/2023 dairy year to place first.
To qualify, herds must be proAction certified, have no infractions through the year and have received the Quality Bonus each month.
BC Branch Awards 4-H Gold Watches
Yvonne Murdoch (left) accepted the Gold Watch on behalf of her nephew Michael Baars for having the Grand Champion Calf at the Maple Ridge Country Fest while Angela Vaandrager accepts the Gold Watch for her daughter, Janessa, who had Reserve Champion calf. The presentations were made at the BC Branch AGM in Vancouver, during the BC Dairy Industry Conference on November 22. The BC Branch sponsors two gold watches annually for the Champion and Reserve calves at BC’s biggest 4-H show.
Congratulations Ben Janzen!

With notes from Jim Byrne
This year’s BC Dairy Industry Achievement Award recipient is Ben Janzen. Growing up on the family dairy farm in Yarrow, Ben took an early interest in the dairy industry as he operated his own dairy. Ben attended the Fraser Valley Milk Producers Association meetings and chaired many local producer meetings. In more recent years, Ben served as a delegate to the Agrifoods International Cooperative.
Ben was elected to the first producer-elected BC Milk Board in 1996 and served for 16 years. In 2016, he accepted a five-year term as Board Chair, ending July 31st of this year. Ben is proud of the Milk Board’s successes which include the strong cooperation of the Western Milk Pool, which now collaborates on many regulatory issues including quota allocations and transportation issues.
Ben credits the support of his wife Jenny and his family for making his 21+ years of dairy industry service possible.
INTRODUCING ATD’S
2-STEP SYSTEM FOR DAIRIES
This simple yet sophisticated system separates the manure into water, solids and nutrients
• Convert Lagoon/Pit to store solids-free irrigation water.
• Capture all TSS and most Phosphorus in 30% D.M. at the barn. • Capture and concentrate 90% of TDS and Ammonia.
• Reduce barn water demand by up to 60% and send to storage. • Increase Nitrogen analysis in manure.
• Manure loads are lighter, provide more nutrition per tonne,
and take less time and fuel to apply.
Dissolved Nutrients are recovered and concentrated for precision application at the best time – maximizing benefits while recovering water for recycling and irrigation.
This Modular, Containerized Manure Management System improves every aspect of handling manure, water and nutrients on the farm
