How do you describe the National Holstein and Red & White Shows at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair 101 in Toronto? In a word: GREAT! The cows were “breathtaking,” and the heifers “exceptional,” as both national shows drew a record number of entries from an enthusiastic group of Canadian and United States exhibitors eager to earn a spot in the Royal’s coveted winner’s circle. R&F Livestock, Cudworth, SK, and Kozak Holsteins, New Sarepta, AB, who travelled together to the Royal, were the only Western Canada showstrings in attendance this year, but they did the West proud with their significant achievements, along with some other Western Canada bred animals.
Two years ago, when the Royal was cancelled during the height of the Covid- 19 pandemic, ERBACRES SNAPPLE SHAKIRA-ET was Grand Champion at Holstein Canada’s 2021 National Holstein Show that had been moved to Saint- Hyacinthe, QC. While the win was sweet, “It was not the Royal,” remarked her owners. This year the popular Shakira fulfilled that goal when she was declared first Mature Cow and Grand Champion of the National Holstein Show at the Royal and then went on to capture the event’s Supreme Dairy Champion title. This 8-year-old, speckled, square cut, well-balanced and dairy O Kaliber daughter is owned by Ferme Jacobs, Ty-D Holsteins, Kilian Theraulaz, Ferme Antelimarck and Attaboy Holstein (QC), and was fresh off her second Grand and Supreme Championship victory at World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin the month before. Clinching Reserve Grand Champion was the winning Senior 3-Year- Old, GLENIRVINE UNIX SALLY, the Ontario bred Unix daughter owned by MilkSource, Laurie Fischer, Cy Letter and Robert Sabo (WI), who was admired for her dairy strength and beautiful mammary system.
In all, Judge Adam Liddle of New York analyzed and placed a record 434 Holsteins over two days of judging on November 9 & 10 at the Royal. Ferme Jacobs, who bred three class winners, won their tenth Premier Breeder banner at the Royal and again headed the strong Breeder’s Herd class. Jim Butler (IL) handily took the Overall and Junior Premier Exhibitor awards after winning four classes and showing the Intermediate Champion (JACOBS DESTINY BALLA,
Summer 2-Year-Old), Junior Champion and Royal Supreme Dairy Heifer (LEHOUX VICTOR TOPAGE, Winter Yearling), and the Reserve Junior Champion (PETITCERLC LAMBDA ANNY, Summer Yearling). Farnear Delta-Lambda was Junior and Overall Premier Sire.
Bryce Fisher of R&F Livestock and Pierre Boulet (QC) claimed Reserve Intermediate Champion with their powerful and good ribbed first Winter Yearling in Milk by Mystique Avenger, OLORTINE AVENGER DESIGN. A few classes later, R&F Livestock rose to the top again, taking the lead in the 5-Year-Olds with a dairy, good tracking Stantons Chief daughter, RUTI CHIEF EMPRESS. Two second place cows also came from R&F – PIERSTEIN CHIEF ALRIGHT in the Spring 2-Year-Olds, and JENDRO DELTA L AMBDA SANDY, owned with Walker Dairy (ON), in the Winter 2-Year-Olds.
Several special awards were presented during the National Holstein Show. Markus Hehli (AB) won the Curtis Clark Achievement Award, while Rob Heffernan (ON) was presented the Andrea Crowe Memorial Award, and Mike Deaver (AZ), who was working with the Butler showstring, earned the Donald Dubois Showmanship Award. LOYALYN GOLDWYN JUNE, the oldest cow at the Royal at 17 years of age and with nearly 157,000 kg of 4.6% milk lifetime to date, won the Longtime Production class for Pierre Boulet and also took the show’s Lactanet Production Award.
The National Red & White Holstein Show drew a new high of 155 entries for the appraisal of Judge Jeff Stephens of Ontario. Not to be denied the Grand Champion title was the winning 4-Year- Old, PREMIUM APPLE CRISP LILLY, the dairy, silky hided and long bodied, Quebec bred Apple Crisp daughter from Jim Butler who had also been Grand at World Dairy Expo. Reserve went to the deep ribbed first Senior 3-Year-Old by Unstopabull, GOLDEN-OAKS TEMPTRES-RED-ET, owned by MilkSource, Fischer, Steincrest and Crescentmead (WI). Ferme Rolandale (QC) went home with both the Overall Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners on their Jolibois prefixed animals, while MR BLONDIN WARRIOR-RED-ET easily emerged as Overall and Junior Premier Sire in the Reds.
Kozak Holsteins had a Royal to remember as they bred three Red & White milking
class winners who then combined to earn them first place in the Breeder’s Herd class, while also helping them to be runner-up for Overall Premier Breeder. Anchoring their Breeder’s Herd entry was KOZAK AUSSIE RED RIBBON P, the balanced and lovely framed Mature Cow winner by Bluechip Mraussie Apple- Imp-ET-Red who also collected the show ’s Champion Bred & Owned award for the Kozak family. She was joined in the Breeder’s Herd by KOZAK WARRIOR BOMBSHELL RED, the first Fall 2-Year- Old and Honourable Mention Intermediate Champion by Warrior who is owned by R&F Livestock and the late Bill Schilling (MI), and Bombshell’s younger full sister, KOZAK WARRIOR RED BLAZE P, who was first Winter Yearling in Milk for Kozak, R&F, Ells Dairy Farm (SK) and Orville Schmidt (AB).
Hamming Holsteins (BC) bred the winning Spring Yearling in the Reds, HAMMING JORDY MONAE, a balanced Jordy-Red heifer with nice spring of rib who is now owned by London Dairy Farms (ON).
In the Royal’s 282-head National Jersey Show, held on November 11th, a young cow with Western Canada ties, LONE PINE JORDAN BOOSTER, bred by Lone Pine Jerseys (AB), was first Senior 2-Year- Old, Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion for Pierre Boulet and Mike Berry (OR).
