N Herds of Distinction 2023
THIS AWARD RECOGNIZES TOTAL LIFETIME PRODUCTION (KG) OF ANIMALS IN THE HERD.
CRITERIA:
Includes all cows in the herd having completed a lactation in 2023.
Lifetime milk production of all animals in the herd who have completed a lactation in 2023 are used to calculate the Milk Herd average.
Grouped by herd size (herd size = number of animals completing a lactation in 2023)

BC DAIRY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, no awards were presented in 2020 and 2021.
BC DAIRY INDUSTRY MILK QUALITY AWARDS: 2015-2023
Annual period August 01-July 31.
Milk Quality Awards are based on the combination of SCC and IBC added together. Herds must be proAction Certified continuously through the year and have received the Quality Bonus each month.
Congratulations to the producers and their staff who work diligently every day to ensure that their milk is of the highest quality!
2023 AWARD WINNER BEN JANZEN
Past dairyman Ben Janzen served 16 years on the BC Milk Board before returning in 2016 for five years as the Chair. Ben had additionally served as a delegate to Agrifoods International Cooperative in recent years. He graciously compliments the dedication and capability of Milk Board staff.
2022 Ben Brandsema – Ben’s long tenure in dairy began as
a producer in 1974. Besides operating expanding organic dairies beginning in 1999, Ben served as a Director of FVMPA and BC Dairy and Chair of Agrifoods International and Ultima Foods. Dairying and advocating remain Ben’s focus.
2019 Jim Thompson – A lifelong dairy researcher and professor, Dr Thompson made great contributions through his leadership at the UBC Dairy
Education and Research Centre where leading Animal Welfare research has become a major focal point.
2018 David Schmidt – Raised
on a Sumas Prairie dairy farm, respected ag journalist David Schmidt spent his career covering a wide range of agriculture issues including dairy.
2017 Wally Smith - Vancouver Island dairyman, Smith was President of Dairy Farmers of Canada from 2011 to 2017 in addition to serving numerous other industry committees and boards.
2016 John van Dongen - After completing his Ag Economics degree, van Dongen began his own dairy farm in 1975 and later, filled significant roles in provincial politics from 1995 to 2013, including Minister of Agriculture.
