The Westerner Dairy Showcase, held in Red Deer, AB, on October 20-21, continues to be one of Western Canada’s premier dairy shows. Mark Nutsford was given the task of judging both the Jersey and Holstein shows, adding this first Canadian judging assignment to his list in over 20 countries worldwide. He and his wife Susan live in Manchester, United Kingdom, where they own and operate the famed Riverdane Holsteins herd.
The Jersey show kicked off on Friday with 47 entries. Junior Champion honours went to the winning Fall Calf, SWEETRIDGE LIGHTNING KILKEE, exhibited by Harold & Miriam Sweetnam, MB. She beat out LAMPADA CHOCOCHIP JULIA, the winning Winter Calf, exhibited by Jon & Christina Fornwald, MB. Honourable Mention was awarded to BRAMVILLE COHORT VIEWS, from Bramville Jerseys, SK.
Judge Nutsford chose his winning Junior 3-Year Old, CLANMAN JORDAN SCOTTIE, exhibited by Jon Fornwald, Jamie Donohoe and Jazmyne Barkman, MB, as his Intermediate Champion. Reserve went to the winning Intermediate Milking Yearling, SUNNYFARM WEBCAM JOELLEN, owned by Sunny Dairy Farm, MB, who was followed by the winning Summer Junior 2-Year Old, LONE PINE CONTOUR MARY JANE,
exhibited by Lone Pine Jerseys, AB, for Honourable Mention.
Although a smaller show in numbers, Judge Nutsford noted the quality of the cattle exhibited and at the end of the day he selected the winning 5-Year Old, BATESDALE TOPKEA JADE OF FUN, exhibited by Markus Hehli, as his Grand Champion. She was given the advantage over the Reserve Champion, LONE PINE JOEL DESPACITO, the winning Mature Cow, exhibited by Lone Pine Jerseys. “My winning cow is just a little harder through her top and showing me a little more levelness of the udder floor today, but a very close placing,” said Judge Nutsford. Honourable Mention was awarded to UNIQUE HALIFAX WEEKEND, 1st Senior 3-Year Old, exhibited by Unique Stock Farm, AB. Lone Pine Jerseys also captured both Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the show.
On Saturday, roughly 200 head of Holsteins paraded in front of Judge Nutsford. Junior Champion honours went to SR SIDEKICK EVENING TINGE, 1st Summer Yearling, exhibited by R&F Livestock, SK. She was followed by SILVERMAPLE PICASSO FRAN, 1st Winter Yearling, exhibited by Benbie Holsteins, SK, for Reserve. Honourable Mention was awarded to MCWILLIAMS
SHAKIRA-RED, the winning Spring Calf, exhibited by Westcoast Holsteins, BC. Shakira was also selected as the Junior Champion of the R&W Show, followed by MOSNANG ILLUSTRATOR NARNIA, 1st Winter Calf, from Mosnang Holsteins, AB, for Reserve Champion. KOZAK WILLOWS RED DESIRE, 2nd Winter Calf, exhibited by Kozak Holsteins, AB, secured Honourable Mention.
In the finale of the R&W portion of the show, Judge Nutsford stuck with his two Intermediate Champion winners as his Grand and Reserve Champions of the show. KOZAK WARRIOR BOMBSHELL- RED, 1st Fall 2 Year Old, was exhibited by R&F Livestock & William Schilling, SK, and is definitely no stranger to the winners circle as she was recently 1st Fall 2 Year Old at World Dairy Expo. She was followed by her full sister, KOZAK WARRIOR RED BLAZE, 2nd (1st R&W) Winter Milking Yearling, exhibited by R&F Livestock, Kozak Holsteins, Ells Dairy Farm and Orville Schmidt, SK. Honourable Mention of the R&W show went to LOVHILL DB STRAWBERRY, 1st Senior 3 Year Old, exhibited by Lovholm Holsteins, SK.
In the B&W division, Intermediate Champion honours were awarded to MCGARR-FARMS UNIX ZANY, 1st Junior 3
Year Old, exhibited by Westcoast Holsteins. Judge Nutsford gave her the advantage in venation, fore teat placement and width of rump over KOZAK WARRIOR BOMBSHELL for Reserve. Honourable Mention went to OLORTINE AVENGER DESIGN, the winning Winter Milking Yearling, exhibited by R&F Livestock, touted as a “tremendous young cow with a bright future,” by Judge Nutsford.
Before selecting his Grand Champion, the judge said, “I’ve had a ball out here today - the quality has been tremendous. It’s been a dream of mine to come and judge in Canada and the hospitality I’ve had has been second to none.” With that, he chose his Intermediate Champion, MCGARR- FARMS UNIX ZANY, as Grand Champion of the show. “A tremendous dairy cow to win, open ribbed with a silky mammary system,” he said, before giving the nod to his 1st place 4 Year Old, CORLANE UNIX SALISBURY, exhibited by Wendon Holsteins, AB, for Reserve. Honourable Mention went to the winning Mature Cow, SERLI SAMMY BELINDA, exhibited by Laurie & Donna Harp, MB.
After winning the Senior Breeders Herd, Wendon Holsteins went on to capture the Premier Breeder banner, while R&F Livestock claimed Premier Exhibitor.
